An oil spill at a refinery in Peru throughout excessive waves brought on by the explosion final weekend of a volcano in Tonga is an “ecological catastrophe,” the Peruvian authorities stated on Wednesday.
The overseas ministry stated that the oil spill had harmed animal and plants in protected zones over a mixed space of some 18,000 sq. kilometers (6,950 sq. miles) round islands and fishing areas.

The spill from a tanker that was unloading crude at Spanish oil firm Repsol’s La Pampilla refinery was blamed on unusually giant waves after the huge undersea volcano explosion in Tonga some 10,000 km (6,213 miles) away triggered tsunami warnings throughout the Pacific Ocean.
