Opioid Distributors Reach $518M Settlement with Washington

Washington has reached a $518 million settlement with drug distributors McKesson Corp MCK.N, AmerisourceBergen Corp ABC.N and Cardinal Well being CAH.N, ending a months-long trial over the businesses’ alleged position in fueling the opioid epidemic within the state, McKesson introduced on Tuesday.

Washington opted out of a $26 billion nationwide opioid settlement involving the three drug distributors and Johnson & Johnson JNJ.N. It will have obtained as much as $417.9 million from McKesson, Cardinal Well being and AmerisourceBergen underneath that settlement, which was finalized in February.

The state had accused the drug distributors of failing to stop prescription drugs from being diverted for unlawful use. It had sought $38.2 billion to fund remedy.

The distributors, who deny wrongdoing, stated the settlement would offer significant aid to communities impacted by the opioid epidemic in the US. Opioid overdoses have precipitated greater than 500,000 deaths in the US over the previous twenty years, in accordance with the U.S. Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention.
