A detective sergeant is suing the Pierce County Sheriff’s Division in Tacoma, Washington, for alleged discrimination and retaliation towards girls.
Det. Sgt. Jessica Whitehead says she was punished for asking to keep away from youngster violence investigations after the loss of life of her stepdaughter, in response to the lawsuit. Whitehead additionally stated a criticism made to Human Sources was mishandled and she or he was handled in another way than male staff.
A lawsuit was filed March 31 in Superior Courtroom towards the Sheriff’s Division, the county Human Sources Division, Undersheriff Brent Bomkamp, Chief Kevin Roberts and Lt. James Loeffelholz, The Information Tribune reported.
No particular damages are outlined within the lawsuit.
Adam Faber, spokesperson for the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Workplace, which represents the Sheriff’s Division in authorized issues, stated he can’t touch upon pending litigation.
Whitehead is one among 163 girls in a division of 667 staff, in response to county statistics.
In April 2019, a male officer allegedly overheard Undersheriff Bomkamp make a sexist remark to a different man in division management.
The lawsuit alleges the division didn’t abide by its personal coverage when investigating the undersheriff’s feedback. As a substitute, it says, a lieutenant questioned feminine detectives, saying the undersheriff was offended that somebody reported it.
In November, three Black girls who work in Pierce County Jail sued the Sheriff’s Division, claiming a sample of discrimination and retaliation that harmed minority staff. Pierce County Superior Choose Thomas Quinlan agreed and ordered the county final month to pay the defendants a complete $850,000 in damages.
In 2017, the Pierce County Council authorized a $680,000 settlement for the same lawsuit towards the Sheriff’s Division.
